Derrick Groves, the final inmate to escape from the Orleans Parish Justice Center in New Orleans on May 16, 2025, has been apprehended in southwest Atlanta, Georgia, ending a nearly five-month manhunt.
Authorities, including the U.S. Marshals and Atlanta Police, surrounded a residence where Groves was reportedly hiding. Officers used gas to enter the home before finding him in a crawl space beneath the property.
Groves, 28, had been convicted of two counts of second-degree murder stemming from a 2018 Mardi Gras Day shooting and was awaiting a life sentence at the time of his escape. His violent history made him the most dangerous of the ten inmates who fled during the breakout.
Attorney General Liz Murrill confirmed Groves now faces additional charges related to his escape. Orleans District Attorney Jason Williams praised law enforcement efforts, stating the arrest restores public safety and ensures Groves will answer for all his crimes.
The capture marks the conclusion of one of the most significant jail breaks in recent U.S. history, bringing relief to both the community and law enforcement agencies.
