The Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Oji River in Enugu State, Rt Rev Ikechukwu Egbuonu, has shared concerns raised by the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, during his visit to the Sokoto Correctional Facility.
Speaking in an interview with AIT, Bishop Egbuonu said Kanu complained about his heart condition. He also expressed worry over the long distance from Abuja to Sokoto, stressing that it could affect his ability to properly pursue his appeal.
Despite these concerns, the Bishop noted that Kanu appeared calm and composed during the visit.
According to Bishop Egbuonu, Kanu said he needed to be in Abuja to reconcile his records with the High Court before proceeding with the appeal. He reportedly has only 90 days to follow up on this process.
The Bishop quoted him as saying he was unhappy that no directive had been issued for him to be moved to Abuja for the necessary documentation and returned afterwards.
Bishop Egbuonu also said he overheard Kanu trying to speak with his lawyer about an issue the lawyer had raised concerning a misunderstanding linked to documents he submitted for filing.
“He’s feeling bad about not being able to speak to his lawyers,” he stated.
When asked about reports suggesting that Kanu had sacked his legal team, the Bishop clarified that this was not the case.
According to him, Kanu chose to defend himself personally while retaining his lawyers as consultants to guide him.
He added that the lawyers were still actively participating in the case, noting that one of them arrived with him during the visit.
