NNPP Insists Governor Yusuf Is Still Its Member
The founder of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, Dr Boniface Aniebonam, says Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State did not resign from the party itself but only stepped away from the Kwankwasiyya Movement led by Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso.
Aniebonam made the claim on Saturday while reacting to reports that the governor had quit the NNPP alongside several lawmakers and council chairmen.
He argued that the resignation letter was not sent to the recognised national leadership of the party but to a Kwankwasiyya figure in Diso-Chiranchi Ward, Gwale Local Government Area.
He insisted that the party’s National Working Committee does not recognise the Kwankwasiyya Movement ward structure as part of the NNPP leadership.
According to him, the letter was not addressed to the authentic NWC led by Dr Major Agbo, nor to any duly recognised state or ward party official.
The NNPP founder also said court rulings had affirmed the Aniebonam-led Board of Trustees as the legitimate authority of the party, adding that the Kwankwasiyya Movement had long ceased to be part of the NNPP.
He maintained that Yusuf and other elected officials won their mandates under the NNPP platform and logo, not that of the movement.
Aniebonam said the party has no dispute with the governor personally and respects whatever political choices he makes.
He urged members in Kano and across the country to remain calm and focused, expressing confidence that the NNPP would remain competitive ahead of the 2027 general elections.
