Obi Sparks Debate Over Abacha
Peter Obi has stirred controversy after saying former military ruler Sani Abacha appears more democratic than some past pro-democracy activists.
The comment came amid rising tension within the African Democratic Congress over its leadership crisis.
The former Labour Party presidential candidate made the remark on his social media page, criticising individuals linked to the National Democratic Coalition.
He suggested that some who once fought for democracy are now acting in ways that contradict those ideals.
His statement followed recent actions by the Independent National Electoral Commission, which removed key party figures from its portal and suspended recognition of factions within the ADC pending a court decision.
The move has intensified disputes within the party.
Security was later tightened around INEC headquarters in Abuja as authorities sought to prevent clashes between rival protest groups. The situation continues to draw attention as political tensions build.
