Ogun Govt Steps In On Corper Death Case
The Ogun State Government has assumed control of the prosecution involving Abass Olalekan, an official of the National Youth Service Corps, over the death of a corps member, Victoria Olapeju Ariyo, in Abeokuta.
The case centres on claims that he played a role in events leading to her death.
The matter came into focus after Olalekan, who previously served as a local government inspector in Abeokuta South, was arrested and brought before a magistrates’ court on a two-count charge.
He was later granted bail, a decision that sparked reactions and debate online about the strength of the case.
According to the state Attorney General, Oluwasina Ogungbade, the bail ruling has been wrongly interpreted by some members of the public.
He explained that the charges followed a police probe which pointed to a relationship between the official and the deceased, as well as claims that he supported the termination of her pregnancy, after which she died.
The government also dismissed claims suggesting weak evidence or missing witnesses, describing such reports as misleading.
It stated that the case is still at an early stage and urged the public to avoid speculation while allowing the court to handle the matter in line with due process.
