Stanley Nwabali has expressed deep regret to Nigerian fans following the Super Eagles’ defeat in the World Cup playoff, acknowledging that the team gave their all in the quest for a spot at the 2026 World Cup.
Nigeria’s dream ended after a tense penalty shootout loss to DR Congo, with the match finishing 1–1 after extra time before Nigeria fell 4–3 on penalties.
Despite Nwabali’s heroics in saving two penalties, misses from Calvin Bassey, Moses Simon, and Semi Ajayi proved costly.
DR Congo’s captain, Chancel Mbemba, calmly converted the decisive penalty to send his team into the intercontinental playoffs.
In a heartfelt Instagram message after the game, Nwabali shared his empathy as a former Super Eagles supporter, recognising the pain of disappointing fans.
He admitted that despite giving their best, it was not enough and took full responsibility on behalf of the team.
