Two separate fires broke out around midnight in Awka, the capital of Anambra State, throwing residents into panic.

The incidents happened at Nwafor Plaza off Oby Okoli Avenue near UNIZIK Junction on Okpuno Road, and at Igiligi Lane off Godwill Junction in Okpuno, Awka South Local Government Area.

The outbreaks occurred late at night when many residents were indoors.

Eyewitnesses said the flames spread quickly, forcing people in the area to rush out for safety as confusion gripped the neighbourhood.

Emergency responders were alerted and moved in to contain the fires and stop them from reaching nearby buildings.

Efforts were focused on bringing the situation under control before further damage could occur.

Authorities are yet to confirm the cause of the incidents. An assessment of the destruction is ongoing as officials work to determine the full impact of the fires.
