Barely 12 hours after Governor Ademola Adeleke resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and following the party’s Osun Chairman, Sunday Bisi, declaration that the governorship primary would not go ahead as planned, the PDP is now moving forward with the primary election set for Tuesday, December 2.
On Monday, Bisi informed selected journalists that the suspension and counter-suspension of crucial national officials—those responsible for overseeing congresses, primaries, and forwarding candidates’ names to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)—had created confusion in the process.
He added that, amid the turmoil within the PDP’s national leadership, Governor Adeleke might no longer be interested in contesting for the party’s ticket for the 2026 Osun governorship election unless a resolution recognised by INEC is reached within the required timeframe.
Hours later, a resignation letter attributed to Governor Adeleke emerged online. Dated November 4, 2025, the letter cited the national leadership crisis within the PDP as the reason for his departure.
Despite this, the PDP national secretariat, through its National Organising Secretary, Hon. Theophilus Shan, confirmed in a letter dated December 1, 2025, that the primary would proceed as scheduled on December 2, 2025.
The letter stated: “Following the earlier notice of October 28, 2025, concerning the gubernatorial primaries and the successful completion of congresses to elect ad-hoc and national delegates in Osun State on November 24 and 29, 2025 respectively, the party hereby reminds key stakeholders and the general public that the primaries to select the gubernatorial candidate will hold on December 2, 2025, at Atlantis Multipurpose Hall, Ring Road, Osogbo, Osun State, starting at 10 a.m.”
The letter also noted that the Electoral Committee for the Primary has been set up and will oversee the conduct of the exercise accordingly.
It further advised: “Candidates cleared for the primaries are expected to conduct themselves in line with the provisions of our party’s constitution and the law, with any acts of indiscipline subject to severe punishment.”
Meanwhile, a top security source revealed that the primary might not take place at the stated venue due to several threats aimed at stopping the exercise, as the state leadership has taken a firm stance against it.
The source said, “Threats have been made to both the venue’s owner and manager, warning them against allowing the primary to proceed. This may force a change of venue, but we are monitoring the situation closely.”
Another party insider who requested anonymity disclosed, “The primary will proceed as scheduled, but the venue has been changed. Security arrangements are assured for all delegates.”
Abiodun, one of the primary organisers, stated, “The state chapter of PDP is threatening us, but we will not be deterred. We are determined to conduct the primary regardless of the threats.”
Attempts to reach State Chairman Sunday Bisi for comments were unsuccessful as his phone was unavailable at the time of reporting.
