Peter Obi, former Anambra State governor, has criticised the reported spending of about $9 million on foreign lobbyists, saying it shows how leaders keep choosing waste over the wellbeing of Nigerians.
He reacted after reports emerged that public funds were used to hire lobbyists in Washington, while living conditions at home continue to worsen. Obi said the issue reflects leadership failure, not a shortage of money.
According to him, Nigeria has remained in the low human development category for over three decades, while countries like China and Indonesia moved ahead by making better choices and investing in their people.
He pointed to health as a clear example, noting that Nigeria now ranks among the worst globally for life expectancy and maternal deaths. He said millions spent abroad could have been used to equip hospitals and save lives across the country.
Obi warned that unless leaders change their priorities and focus on people, the country will keep declining. He said public funds must serve citizens, not image management, and called for discipline and people-centered governance.
