The Anambra State Police Command has announced a total restriction of vehicular movement across the state on Saturday, the day of the governorship election.
In a statement released on Friday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the restriction will be enforced from 12 a.m. to 6 p.m., covering all roads within the state and interstate highways.
According to Ikenga, the ban affects all forms of motorised transportation, including private and commercial vehicles, tricycles, motorcycles, trucks, and shuttle buses.
He explained that the decision followed a meeting of security service commanders in Anambra on November 5, 2025, aimed at preventing political thugs and criminal elements from disrupting the polls.
The police advised interstate travellers to use alternative routes during the restriction period.
However, exemptions will apply to persons on essential duties such as INEC officials, accredited journalists, election observers, medical personnel, and emergency responders — all of whom must carry valid identification and clearance tags.
Residents were urged to cooperate with security operatives and comply with the directive to ensure a peaceful and credible election.
“The command calls on the electorate to remain law-abiding and cooperate with security personnel deployed across the state to enforce this directive and maintain order,” the statement said.
Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has cautioned political parties, candidates, and voters against electoral misconduct or actions that could disrupt peace at polling units.
In a statement posted on its official X handle on Friday, INEC outlined prohibited actions during the election, warning that offenders will face legal consequences.
“No candidate shall canvass for votes, solicit the vote of any voter, persuade any voter not to vote for any particular candidate, or shout slogans concerning the election,” INEC stated.
The commission also banned the display of party symbols or colours, the carrying of offensive weapons, and any form of intimidation of voters.
It urged voters to leave polling areas immediately after voting and warned against loitering, ballot snatching, or the destruction of election materials.
“No contestant, supporter, or voter should loiter without excuse after voting, or blare a siren,” the commission added.
