PVC Revalidation Plan Sparks Outrage
Fresh tension is building ahead of the 2027 elections as the Independent National Electoral Commission faces backlash over its planned voter revalidation exercise.
The African Democratic Congress, Peoples Democratic Party, the Obidient Movement, and civil society groups warned that the move could shut out many Nigerians, especially in rural areas, due to poor access and low awareness.
Concerns grew over the timing and practicality of the exercise, with critics arguing that millions may struggle to complete the process, raising fears of low participation in the 2027 polls.
The electoral body had announced plans to run the exercise from April 13 to May 29, 2026, targeting the removal of invalid entries and improving the voter register.
It also clarified that the process would cover voters registered between 2011 and 2024, not new registrations.
However, the situation took a new turn when the commission later ordered a halt to all preparations, directing officials to suspend publicity and logistics pending further instructions.
Political actors and analysts say the controversy has deepened public doubt about the process, with many questioning whether the exercise will strengthen elections or weaken trust in the system.
