Rivers State politics may experience a major shake-up today as lawmakers from the Amaewhule-led faction of the State House of Assembly are reportedly preparing to announce their defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The planned defection, expected to happen this morning according to insiders, has sparked fresh tension across the state’s political scene.
Sources reveal that the lawmakers have been holding secret meetings in preparation for the announcement.
Close to the situation, sources claim the move is linked to ongoing political shifts involving the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
According to these accounts, Wike’s camp has been under intense pressure following what is seen as a decline in his influence within Abuja’s power circles.
They argue that recent national developments have diminished his long-standing political clout, causing uncertainty among his loyalists in Rivers State.
Some political figures suggest the Presidency is reassessing its priorities ahead of upcoming elections, with indications that Governor Siminalayi Fubara may be attracting increased attention from key stakeholders.
This perceived shift has unsettled Wike’s allies, raising fears they could lose their political relevance if the momentum continues to favour Fubara.
Insiders also allege that concerns are growing within Wike’s camp that Governor Fubara might be exploring new political alliances.
One source claimed the camp suspects Fubara could be considering “a possible move toward the APC,” a rumour that has reportedly heightened anxiety among Wike’s supporters.
This fear, according to circulating reports, is motivating the Amaewhule-led lawmakers to act swiftly.
Supporters of this theory say the legislators want to secure their place as influential players in the emerging political order and avoid being sidelined.
At the time of reporting, no official announcement has been made by the lawmakers or the APC.
However, reports from Port Harcourt indicate a charged atmosphere since last night, with many awaiting confirmation of the defection.
If the defection occurs, it would represent one of the most significant political realignments in Rivers State in recent months and could intensify the ongoing rivalry between Wike and Governor Fubara.
