Soludo Reaches Agreement With Market Leaders
Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo has reached an agreement with market leaders for markets across the state to open from Monday to Saturday.
The decision was announced in Awka following talks aimed at restoring full trading activities, especially in Onitsha Main Market.
The governor said the continued Monday shutdown has badly hurt the state economy and must end. He stated that the sit-at-home practice, which began as a political protest, has now turned into a criminal activity that no longer reflects its original cause or benefits Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
He warned that the government would apply “extreme measures” if markets fail to comply, adding that those enforcing the shutdown are mostly not from Anambra.
The governor also offered traders a “renovate or rebuild” choice for Onitsha Main Market, either through complete demolition and reconstruction or a full upgrade of existing structures.
Market leaders agreed to comply but asked for stronger security, better transport access, and firm action against those backing the shutdown, as Soludo assured them that markets would no longer close on Mondays and ended by saying “Igbo land and Anambra will move forward,”.
