Lagos State authorities have arrested 45 people involved in street begging across Alimosho, Agege, and Oshodi during a coordinated enforcement operation.
The arrests were conducted by environmental enforcement officers as part of the state government’s ongoing sanitation and compliance drive.
Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, confirmed the operation on Tuesday via his official X account. He stated, “As part of our ongoing enforcement and mop-up exercises across the state, additional arrests were recorded today.”
Breaking down the operation, Wahab noted that 17 individuals were arrested in Alimosho, 12 in Agege, with a further 10 and six taken into custody in Alimosho and Oshodi respectively during follow-up operations.
Wahab explained that the crackdown is part of the state’s strict policy against street begging, which he described as an environmental nuisance and a public safety threat.
“Street begging along highways, medians, and public spaces endangers both the individuals involved and other road users, while also disrupting public order,” he said.
The commissioner reiterated the government’s commitment to sustained enforcement to ensure a safer, cleaner, and more orderly Lagos.
