Supreme Court Ends Kudirat Abiola Case
The Supreme Court of Nigeria has brought an end to the trial of Major Hamza Al-Mustapha (retd), former Chief Security Officer to the late General Sani Abacha, in the case concerning the assassination of Kudirat Abiola, wife of the late politician and businessman MKO Abiola.
The dismissal follows the withdrawal of the case by the Lagos State Government, effectively halting proceedings that have lasted for years.
The move closes a chapter on one of Nigeria’s most high-profile legal battles related to political violence in the 1990s.
Al-Mustapha, who has consistently maintained his innocence, will no longer face prosecution for the allegations linked to the late Kudirat Abiola’s death. Legal experts note that the withdrawal of the prosecution signals the end of state-led efforts to pursue the case.
The development has sparked reactions across political and civil society circles, with calls for continued accountability and reflection on historical injustices.
Observers say the ruling may reshape discussions on past political crimes and the role of the judiciary in handling sensitive cases tied to Nigeria’s military era.
