TikToker Faces 10yrs Jail Term Over False Rape Claim
Mirabel is facing severe legal consequences after confessing that her viral rape story was fabricated. Investigators confirmed the allegation was false, putting her at risk of up to 10 years in prison and fines as high as ₦25 million under Nigerian law.
The Ogun State Police Command, which handled the case in Ogijo, is focusing on offences linked to false reporting and the electronic spread of misinformation.
Authorities are considering criminal charges under the Criminal Code Act for giving false information to police, an offence that carries imprisonment where public resources were mobilised.
Because the claim was widely shared online, the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act 2015 may impose the heaviest penalties. Section 24 criminalises knowingly transmitting false information electronically in ways that cause panic, reputational harm, or public disorder, with fines of up to ₦7 million or three years in jail.
Where the case attracts national attention or causes disruption, penalties escalate to as much as 10 years imprisonment and a ₦25 million fine.
A conviction would leave Mirabel with a permanent criminal record, substantial financial liability, and a lengthy custodial sentence.
