Tinubu Orders Removal Top Police Officer
President Bola Tinubu has removed Kayode Egbetokun as Inspector General of Police, ending his tenure after months of controversy.
Senior officials confirmed on Tuesday that the President directed him to step aside and prepare his handover notes.
Tunji Disu, who heads the Force Criminal Investigation Department Annex in Alagbon, Lagos, is set to take over.
Sources within the police said Egbetokun was informed of the decision after a visit to the Presidential Villa.
Some officers reportedly celebrated the news at the Force Headquarters.
His time in office had drawn criticism over his extended stay beyond the standard retirement limits and claims of favouritism within the force.
Allegations also trailed his leadership, including questions over rapid promotions of a senior aide and reports linking funds from Anambra State’s security vote to a family member.
Instead of a public probe, legal battles followed, with lawsuits filed against journalists and activist Omoyele Sowore over reports and comments concerning his office.
Court orders were later issued restricting further publications on the matter.
Egbetokun’s removal marks a new phase for the police leadership as Disu prepares to assume control.
Attention is now on how the incoming chief will steer the force amid calls for transparency and reform.
