Arsenal strengthened their hold on the Premier League lead with a composed 2–0 victory over Brentford on Wednesday night, with Mikel Merino and Bukayo Saka finding the net.

Mikel Arteta made three changes from the side that drew with Chelsea, restoring Ben White, introducing Noni Madueke and handing the captain’s armband back to Martin Ødegaard. The tweaks brought instant balance and control to Arsenal’s play.

The opening goal arrived early, just 11 minutes in. White pushed forward from right-back and sent in a measured cross that was met by Merino, who rose highest to nod the ball beyond Caoimhin Kelleher.

With Arsenal short of recognised strikers due to injuries to Kai Havertz, Gabriel Jesus and Viktor Gyökeres, Merino has been deployed higher up the pitch and continues to thrive. His latest effort took his goal tally for 2025 to 13, more than any other Arsenal player this year.

Brentford’s best moment of the match came when Kevin Schade connected with a corner, but David Raya reacted sharply to tip the header onto the crossbar. Aside from that scare, the visitors found it difficult to trouble Arsenal’s defence.

The second goal arrived deep into first-half stoppage time. Merino turned creator, slipping a neat through ball into Saka’s path, and the winger kept his nerve to score, despite Kelleher getting a slight hand to the shot.

After the interval, Arsenal managed the game comfortably, though Arteta was forced to make changes after Cristhian Mosquera and Declan Rice both took knocks.

The win extends Arsenal’s unbeaten run to 18 matches in all competitions and marks their eighth straight victory at home, further underlining their authority at the top of the Premier League.
