Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has said that Governor Siminalayi Fubara and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly will resume duties on September 18, when the state of emergency in the state expires.
Wike disclosed this on Saturday after casting his vote in the ongoing local government election at polling unit 7, ward 9, in Rumuepirikom community, Obio-Akpor Local Government Area.
The former Rivers governor described the exercise as peaceful, noting that election materials arrived on time and voters were able to cast their ballots without disruptions.
He explained that holding the local government election under emergency rule was necessary to avoid a governance vacuum at the grassroots level after September 18.
“What this election means—and you know by 18 September that state of emergency will expire and the governor and state house of assembly will come back to their jobs—and then remember that the Supreme Court had nullified the other election, and if this election was not conducted, it means that there is no governance at the grassroots level,” Wike said.
