Adelabu Apologises Over Blackouts, Keeps Gov Ambition Open
The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, on Tuesday publicly apologised to Nigerians for last month’s persistent electricity outages, admitting that homes, schools, businesses, and industries faced severe hardship amid scorching dry-season heat.
He said the situation is temporary and largely caused by factors beyond the government’s control, while assuring that improvements in power supply are expected within two weeks.
Asked about the possibility of contesting the Oyo State governorship, he said, “What matters to me most now is this job that I am doing as the Honourable Minister of Power… Resolving the power supply challenges is my priority for now.”
He added that any decision on governorship ambitions would be addressed by March 31.
The minister outlined measures to stabilise the power sector, including committees monitoring gas supply compliance, repairs to gas pipelines, and improved payment flows to suppliers.
He reiterated the government’s commitment to restoring generation to 6,000 megawatts by the end of 2026 and said current setbacks are temporary deviations from the progress made in 2025.
