Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has described his son Abba’s defection from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress as a personal decision, stressing it should not cause alarm.

He said family members are entitled to make independent political choices in a democracy.
Abba formally joined the APC in Abuja, where he was welcomed by the Deputy Senate President and other party leaders from the North-East. He announced plans to support President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid and encouraged his network to align with the ruling party ahead of the polls.
Atiku criticised the APC’s governance, arguing that political choices should reflect values and leadership quality. He used the occasion to reaffirm his commitment to building an alternative political platform focused on good governance, credible leadership, and national development.
A former APC presidential aspirant, Adamu Garba, had earlier warned party members against celebrating Abba’s move, raising concerns about family loyalty and moral implications for the party’s supporters.
Atiku maintained that personal decisions by family members should not interfere with broader democratic engagement, underlining that he would continue to work with like-minded patriots to strengthen governance and offer Nigerians alternatives to the ruling party.
