NIS Rescues Trafficked Women And Children
The Nigeria Immigration Service has rescued 59 women and children who were being trafficked from Katsina State to N’Djamena, the capital of the Republic of Chad.
The victims were intercepted during an operation after immigration officers uncovered a plan to move them out of the country under false pretences. According to officials, the women and children were lured with promises of well-paying jobs and a better life abroad.
Preliminary findings showed that the traffickers targeted vulnerable families, convincing them that the trip would lead to legitimate employment opportunities. Instead, the victims were at risk of exploitation once they crossed the border.
The NIS said the rescued individuals have been placed in safe custody and are receiving support, while investigations are ongoing to track down and prosecute those behind the trafficking attempt.
The service reaffirmed its commitment to tightening border security and cracking down on human trafficking networks operating across Nigeria’s borders.
