Former Peoples Democratic Party presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has reacted to Peter Obi’s defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing it as a defining moment for Nigeria’s evolving opposition alliance.
Peter Obi, the former Labour Party presidential flagbearer and ex-governor of Anambra State, formally joined the ADC on Wednesday at the Nike Lake Resort in Enugu. Speaking at the event, Obi called on Nigerians and opposition stakeholders to unite under a broad coalition aimed at “rescuing Nigeria from poverty, disunity and democratic decline,” while accusing the current political leadership of economic mismanagement, state capture and erosion of democratic values.
In a statement shared on his verified X account, Atiku said Obi’s entry into the ADC marked the beginning of a more focused and coordinated opposition capable of mounting a serious challenge for power and delivering effective governance.
“Today marks a significant moment in the history of political coalitions in our country, with the official declaration of my brother and associate, Peter Obi, into the African Democratic Congress,” Atiku stated.
He added that Obi’s decision would strengthen cooperation among opposition leaders and energise efforts to present Nigerians with a credible alternative to the current administration.
“It is my pleasure to welcome him officially, as we look forward to a strong working relationship that will help build a virile opposition, one capable of forming a government that brings peace and prosperity to our people,” he said.
Atiku also expressed optimism that the ADC coalition’s emergence would attract wider support and encourage more Nigerians to align with its political vision.
