Celtic announced on Monday that Brendan Rodgers has resigned as the club’s manager, bringing his second stint at the Scottish club to an end.
The decision came after Celtic suffered a 3-1 Scottish Premiership loss to Hearts on Sunday, leaving them eight points behind the Edinburgh side.
“Celtic Football Club can confirm that football manager Brendan Rodgers has today tendered his resignation,” the club said. “Brendan will leave his role with immediate effect. He leaves with our thanks for the role he has played during a period of continued success for the club, and we wish him further success in the future.”
The search for a permanent successor is already underway, with former manager Martin O’Neill and ex-player Shaun Maloney stepping in to oversee the first team on an interim basis.
Rodgers, 52, returned to Celtic in June 2023, adding consecutive league titles to his previous successes in 2017 and 2018. During his first spell between 2016 and 2019, he guided the club to successive league and cup trebles, including an unbeaten 106-point season—the first Scottish top-flight team to finish a season undefeated since 1899.
He has also managed Swansea, Liverpool, and Leicester. In his latest tenure at Celtic, Rodgers secured the Scottish League Cup and Scottish Cup alongside back-to-back league titles.
This season, however, brought challenges, highlighted by Celtic’s surprise Champions League exit to Kazakhstan’s Kairat Almaty, marking a difficult period for the Glasgow side.
