CBN Sends Fresh Warning on Naira Use
The Central Bank of Nigeria has warned that turning naira notes into bouquets, towers or cakes is against the law.
The reminder comes amid the growing trend of using cash for party displays and social events across the country.
The bank said the practice falls under currency abuse as stated in Section 21 of the CBN Act 2007.
It explained that the law forbids spraying, defacing, stapling or damaging the nation’s legal tender in any form.
Offenders risk facing six months in prison, a ₦50,000 fine, or both penalties if found guilty.
Authorities say enforcement remains in place for anyone caught mishandling the currency.
The CBN urged Nigerians to treat the naira with care, noting that it is a national symbol that must not be misused for decoration or celebration.
