Muyiwa Adejobi, the long-serving and controversial Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Police Force, has been removed from his position at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, SaharaReporters has learned.

His deputy is expected to assume the role as Adejobi is redeployed to the Delta State Command.

Adejobi, who for years served as the public face of the Police, leaves amid a legacy of scandals. He was repeatedly accused of using his office to shield the Force from accountability, repress dissent on social media, and intimidate critics. Senior officers within the Police also alleged he was involved in various personal controversies described as “women issues.”

Despite his contentious record, Adejobi was promoted to Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), a move that sparked public outrage and questions about his suitability for the role. His tenure also attracted international scrutiny after human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju petitioned the U.S. Embassy to revoke his visa, citing his alleged abuse of office.

Among those who accused him of misconduct were nurse Olamide Thomas, who claimed retaliation after rejecting his advances, and UK-based Dorcas Adeyinka, who sued him for allegedly framing her for murder and violating her fundamental rights.

Following multiple allegations, Adejobi reportedly stopped signing official police statements directly, instead working through proxy media groups such as Ndigbo Young Professionals, South West Youth Alliance, Swift Reporters, and The Integrity Youth Alliance, run by close associates.

In one widely publicized incident, Adejobi allegedly instructed a cameraman to steal activist Omoyele Sowore’s Ray-Ban glasses during the #PoliceProtest — an act caught on video. The glasses were later returned after public pressure.

His removal comes as Sowore renewed criticism of police impunity, describing Adejobi as “one of the worst policemen ever recruited into the Nigeria Police Force,” and calling for systemic reforms. Sowore’s comments followed a police statement signed by Adejobi defending Sowore’s recent arrest and denying allegations that officers broke his hand during detention. Witnesses, however, claim Sowore was assaulted by at least eight officers linked to Adejobi’s office.

Police sources told SaharaReporters that Adejobi’s redeployment signals the end of a turbulent era in the Force Headquarters’ Public Relations Department.
