Defecting Governors Causes Changes In APC Structures
Governors who recently joined the All Progressives Congress have secured firm control of party structures in their states following the emergence of new chairmen at congresses held nationwide.
The exercises, completed at ward, local government and state levels, are seen as a build-up to the 2027 general elections.
In states such as Delta, Enugu, Bayelsa and Taraba, allies of the defecting governors emerged as state chairmen through consensus.
The APC’s National Working Committee ordered the immediate swearing-in of all elected executives, saying the move followed the party’s constitution.
Former PDP figures now lead the party in several states. In Delta, Solomon Arenyeka became chairman after Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s defection reshaped the political landscape.
In Enugu, former PDP chairman Martin Chukwunweike took charge, while Abubakar Bawa emerged in Taraba.
Elsewhere, incumbents were returned unopposed in Edo, Plateau, Kebbi and Lagos, among others.
Observers say the pattern reflects a calculated effort to align party leadership with sitting governors as preparations quietly gather pace for 2027.
