The Department of State Services (DSS) has successfully recaptured a fugitive linked to the Ansaru terrorist group and the 2022 Kuje Correctional Centre jailbreak in Abuja, security sources confirmed on Thursday.
The suspect, Abdulaziz Obadaki, was identified as a key planner in the jailbreak that allowed hundreds of inmates to escape, according to intelligence reports.
Previously arrested but later escaped, Obadaki was reportedly a senior Ansaru operative responsible for coordinating sleeper cell activities across Nigeria and aiding the escape of terror suspects.
In July 2022, the Kuje Correctional Centre was attacked, resulting in the escape of 879 inmates, many of whom were considered high-profile terror suspects.
The DSS described Obadaki’s recapture as a major achievement in Nigeria’s ongoing counter-terrorism operations, noting that the arrest will support prosecutions under existing terrorism laws.
Authorities have yet to provide additional details regarding the arrest or announce a date for formal charges or arraignment.
