FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has issued a strong warning to ground rent defaulters in the territory, saying their properties could be seized by the FCT Administration if they fail to meet the payment deadline.
Speaking to journalists yesterday after inspecting ongoing infrastructure projects in Wuse and Life Camp, Wike emphasized that no further extensions would be granted, noting that the two-week and presidential grace periods provided four months ago have long expired.
He stated that officials of the FCTA would seal the premises of defaulters, and the properties would automatically revert to government ownership.
“If you have not paid, we will seal up the premises and the property becomes the property of the FCT Administration. It is unfortunate that many Nigerians who complain are unwilling to follow the rules. When enforcement began, even a presidential intervention gave defaulters extra time. But more than four months have passed, and we cannot carry out projects without tax compliance. This is the last extension,” Wike said.
On infrastructure developments, Wike updated that the Transit Way N2, connecting the Central Business District to Wuse, and the Arterial Road N5 (Obafemi Awolowo Way) from Life Camp Junction to Karmo are progressing well. He expressed satisfaction with the quality of work and contractors’ assurances of timely completion.
He also revealed that the procurement process for the Abuja bus terminals would be completed before the end of the year, with the administration evaluating applicants and their fleet sizes to ensure efficient operations.
