The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has warned residents to stop the sale, purchase, and use of firecrackers, knockouts, and other unauthorised pyrotechnics as the Ember-months festive period approaches.
The command, through its spokesperson SP Josephine Adeh, raised concern over the growing circulation of these explosive items in Abuja, noting that they pose serious risks to lives and property. The police stressed that firecrackers can cause injuries, trigger fires, induce panic, and help criminals conceal their activities. Their use, the statement added, also disturbs public peace and puts children, elderly people, and those with health challenges at risk.
Residents were urged to comply as operatives have been instructed to enforce the directive and arrest anyone found violating the order. The public was also encouraged to report individuals involved in selling or using these banned items.
Police commands in Imo and Plateau states have also announced a complete ban on fireworks ahead of Christmas and New Year, citing the need to prevent injuries, fires, and disturbances during the festive season.
