FG Bans Payment For Electricity Meters
The Federal Government has directed electricity distribution companies (DisCos) and meter installers to stop collecting any form of payment from consumers for electricity meters.
The directive aims to curb illegal charges and protect consumers from exploitation.
Authorities warned that any DisCo staff or installer found demanding or accepting payments for meters would face strict prosecution under the law.
The move comes amid complaints that some operators were extorting customers for meter installations despite regulatory rules.
The government emphasised that electricity meters are to be provided without extra charges to eligible consumers, in line with ongoing efforts to ensure transparency and fairness in the power sector.
Consumers have been urged to report any form of extortion by electricity officials to the appropriate authorities to ensure swift enforcement of the ban.
The decision reinforces the government’s stance on safeguarding public interests and preventing abuses in the distribution of electricity across the country.
