FIFA Sanctions Nigeria And DR Congo
FIFA has sanctioned Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo following separate rule violations during a recent World Cup play-off match.
The world football governing body announced fines against both federations after reviewing incidents involving their supporters.
Nigeria was penalised for failing to maintain order and security at the match after spectators threw objects onto the field.
The action breached Articles 17 and 17.2.b of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, leading to a fine of 1,000 Swiss francs imposed on the Nigeria Football Federation.
The football body in DR Congo received a larger penalty after fans were found to have used laser pointers or similar electronic devices during the game.
The act violated Article 17.2.d of the FIFA Disciplinary Code and resulted in a 5,000 Swiss francs fine against the federation.
Following the defeat, Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle also alleged that officials linked to the Congolese side resorted to voodoo during the encounter, a claim that has stirred debate around the match.
