The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has rejected moves in the State House of Assembly to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, describing the effort as “untenable” and warning against actions that could destabilize the state government.

The warning follows reports that the Rivers State House of Assembly had formally initiated impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara, with Speaker Martins Amaewhule reportedly describing the governor as a “mistake” and accusing him of gross misconduct.

In a statement signed by APC spokesperson Darlington Nwauju, the party emphasized its rejection of the impeachment process.

“The leadership of the APC in Rivers State has taken note of the recent developments in the State House of Assembly. While we recognize the legislature’s independence and constitutional role in checks and balances, we categorically reject any attempt to remove our Governor and his deputy,” the statement said.

The party explained that the impeachment threat centers on the state budget. Nwauju noted that under the emergency rule in 2025, a budget of ₦1.485 trillion was transmitted to and approved by the National Assembly, covering one year until August 2026. He added that the constitution allows a six-month spending window into the new fiscal year, and the Governor may choose not to submit a supplementary budget.

The APC urged all members of the State Assembly, especially APC lawmakers, to resist external pressures that could destabilize the government.

“Our party will do everything necessary to protect the APC-led administration in Rivers State from internal conflicts. We call on lawmakers to immediately halt the impeachment process to preserve the state’s progress and uphold the party’s reputation. Rivers State must remain a democracy, not a politicocracy,” the statement added.

The party reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the stability of the Fubara administration and ensuring the continued development of Rivers State.
