Amid growing calls for him to join the 2027 presidential race, former President Goodluck Jonathan on Sunday visited the Hilltop residence of former Military President Ibrahim Babangida in Minna, Niger State, to celebrate his 84th birthday.
The Minna residence, long regarded as a political pilgrimage site for presidential hopefuls, welcomed Jonathan alongside other well-wishers. His visit comes as some northern politicians and groups opposed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu are urging him to contest, arguing he could complete the South’s eight-year slot in the presidency if Tinubu is not re-elected.
Jonathan, however, avoided addressing any speculation about his political future, instead praising Babangida as a statesman committed to Nigeria’s unity.

“Nigeria has produced leaders since independence, but Gen. Babangida stands out clearly as one of those who want the best for the country,” Jonathan said, describing IBB’s home as “a Mecca of sort” for Nigerians seeking counsel.
He added that Babangida never saw himself as a sectional leader and would continue to be celebrated for his contributions to national unity. Jonathan prayed for the former leader’s long life to enable him to keep mentoring younger generations.
The low-key birthday celebration featured prayers and symbolic gifts from well-wishers.
