The University of Nigeria, Nsukka, has been thrown into deep mourning following the sudden death of its immediate past Vice-Chancellor, Professor Charles Arizechukwu Igwe, who reportedly slumped and passed away after suffering a heart attack on Sunday, December 28, 2025.

News of his death spread quietly in the early hours of the day, leaving members of the academic community, students, alumni, and colleagues in disbelief and sorrow. His passing is regarded as a devastating loss to a university he served with outstanding commitment, and to the scholarly world where his intellect, humility, and leadership were widely admired.

Professor Igwe, an accomplished soil scientist of international recognition, served as the 15th Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, until the completion of his tenure in mid-2024. Even after leaving office, he remained closely connected to the institution, offering guidance, mentorship, and academic support whenever he was called upon.

Renowned for his pioneering work in tropical soil stability and environmental sustainability, he built a distinguished academic career defined by decades of teaching, research, and administrative excellence. His contributions earned him respect beyond Nigeria and established him as one of the nation’s foremost soil scientists.

During his time as Vice-Chancellor, he was known for his calm personality, strong sense of responsibility, and people-centred approach to leadership. Many members of staff and students recall his tenure as a period of relative stability, discipline, and renewed emphasis on academic quality, despite the difficulties facing Nigerian universities.

Tributes have continued to pour in from across Nigeria and abroad since the news of his sudden death emerged. Lecturers describe him as a patient mentor, students remember him as a compassionate leader, and colleagues speak warmly of his integrity, intellect, and remarkable modesty. Flags were flown at half-mast in parts of the university as the reality of his passing set in.

His death is particularly painful to many members of the academic community, coming at a time when his knowledge, experience, and wisdom were still considered invaluable to the development of higher education in the country.

Professor Charles Arizechukwu Igwe is survived by his family, former students, and numerous academic protégés who were inspired by his dedication to scholarship and service. His passing leaves a significant void within the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and in Nigeria’s academic landscape, but his legacy of excellence and leadership will continue to endure.
