A 22-year-old hairstylist, Odama Mary Agado, reportedly took her own life over the weekend in Enugu after learning that her boyfriend was unfaithful.
Mary, a native of Woleche-Ipuole, Yahe Ward in Yala Local Government Area of Cross River State, allegedly ingested a poisonous substance, suspected to be sniper, following the emotional trauma.
She had been living and working in Enugu, where she was reportedly doing well in her hairstyling business. Sources say she even bought a car and rented an apartment for her boyfriend, a gesture that now underscores the depth of her affection.
A family member, Daniel, revealed that Mary visited her boyfriend last Friday and found him with another woman in the apartment she had arranged for him. Distraught, she returned to her own apartment and called her mother, reportedly saying she could no longer live.
Her mother, however, was unable to respond immediately due to lack of airtime. Hours later, she received an urgent call that Mary had ingested poison and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors were unable to save her.
Mary’s body was returned to her hometown in Yala, Cross River State, and buried the same day. “We buried her immediately. She was too young for any prolonged funeral rites. Some believe spiritual forces were at play, but nothing can bring her back,” the family source said.
The family chose not to involve law enforcement, treating the case as a suicide.
The tragic incident has left communities in Enugu and Yala shocked and has reignited discussions about mental health, emotional support, and resilience among young people.
