Igbo Union Issues Stark Warning Against Sharia Law
The Ndi Igbo Worldwide Union has warned the Federal Government, the National Assembly and northern Islamic leaders that Nigeria is nearing a breaking point over Sharia criminal law.
The group said the growing dispute has pushed the country into what it described as an existential national test.
In a statement signed by its President, Benjamin I. Nwankwo, and Secretary, Chief Charles Edemuzo, the union said the time for ambiguity is over.
It argued that resistance to calls for repealing Sharia criminal law has exposed deep constitutional and political flaws within the current system.
The organisation maintained that Nigeria’s legal framework, which accommodates both Sharia and common law, has created a structural imbalance.
It said the nation cannot function effectively with dual legal systems and warned that attempts to impose a single common law system without first dismantling the 1999 Constitution would fail.
Directing its message to lawmakers, the group said the National Assembly must decide whether to remove Sharia from the Constitution and preserve peace or ignore the warning signs and risk national fracture. It added that there is no middle ground and cautioned that history will judge those who fail to act.
