INEC Asked To Shift FCT Polls
The African Democratic Congress has asked the Independent National Electoral Commission to move the date fixed for the Federal Capital Territory Area Council elections, saying the timing clashes with the Ramadan fasting period observed by many voters.
The appeal was made public on Saturday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, who said the request was formally submitted to INEC in a letter dated January 22.
He explained that the party’s concern is centred on ensuring that religious observance does not limit voter participation.
INEC has scheduled the FCT Area Council elections for Saturday, February 21, 2026, a date that falls within the Ramadan period. The ADC said this could affect turnout, particularly among Muslim voters who may find it difficult to take part fully in election activities while fasting.
The party noted that the request was made to protect fairness and broad participation in the democratic process. According to the ADC, elections gain credibility when all eligible voters are able to exercise their rights without facing avoidable obstacles linked to culture or faith.
