Kaduna Police Rejects CAN Reports On Abductions
More than 160 worshippers were reportedly taken from churches in Kurmin Wali, Kajuru Local Government Area of Kaduna State, during Sunday services, according to the Christian Association of Nigeria in the region.
CAN in the 19 northern states and the Federal Capital Territory said the incident happened when suspected terrorists stormed two Cherubim and Seraphim churches during worship, sealed the premises, and forced congregants into nearby bushes.
The group said eight people later escaped, while 163 others were still missing as of Monday.
The association explained that the information came through a distress report from its local leadership in the area, prompting concern over the safety of worshippers and renewed fears about insecurity in parts of southern Kaduna.
The Kaduna State Police Commissioner said no abduction took place and challenged anyone making the claim to provide names and details of victims. He warned that spreading unverified reports could fuel tension and would attract legal consequences.
Backing the police position, the chairman of Kajuru Local Government said a joint security visit to Kurmin Wali found no sign of an attack.
The state government said checks with religious leaders confirmed the claims were unfounded, urging residents to remain calm as security monitoring continues.
