The Olu of Oregun, Dr. Olusesan Olukunmi Akingbola, has declared a compulsory overnight lockdown for all residents of the Oregun community in Lagos in preparation for the traditional Egungun Festival rites.
According to a circular issued by the monarch on Tuesday, every resident—both indigenes and non-indigenes—is required to remain indoors from 10 pm on November 27 until 4 am on November 28, 2025.
Oba Akingbola explained that the restriction is essential to facilitate Agan, a vital aspect of the festival, to move through the area and carry out the customary midnight rituals and sacrifices.
“The public is hereby notified that no one is to be outside during the hours of 10 pm to 4 am. All lights must be switched off by 10 pm. This applies to everyone residing in Oregun,” the notice stated.
The monarch also revealed that the Nigeria Police Force has been alerted and deployed to key points within the community to maintain security during the event.
He cautioned that anyone violating the order would face immediate repercussions according to traditional customs.
