Morocco clinched a historic third TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) title after a dramatic 3-2 victory over first-time finalists Madagascar at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, on Saturday.
The Atlas Lions, who previously won the tournament in 2018 and 2020, faced fierce resistance from a spirited Malagasy side, but their experience and firepower ultimately made the difference. Star striker Oussama Lamlaoui shone brightest, scoring twice—including a stunning 40-yard strike—to finish as the tournament’s top scorer with six goals.
The triumph earned Morocco the gold medal and a $3.5 million prize, while Madagascar, whose remarkable run captured the continent’s imagination, secured silver and $1.2 million.
The final lived up to expectations. Lamlaoui opened the scoring within 15 minutes, assisted by Youssef Mehri, before Toky Rakotondraibe equalised midway through the first half. Morocco quickly regained the lead when Sabir Bougrine converted another Mehri assist.
The second half produced the standout moment of the tournament: Lamlaoui’s audacious long-range strike that left goalkeeper Michel Ramandimbisoa stranded, drawing applause from fans. Lalaina Rafanomezantsoa’s late goal for Madagascar set up a tense finish, but Morocco held on to seal their third CHAN crown in six years.
For Madagascar, the loss was bittersweet. In just their second CHAN appearance, they became the first island nation to reach a CAF senior final, leaving with pride and belief in a bright future.
The 2024 edition, co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, concluded with Morocco reaffirming their status as a benchmark in African football.
