NASS Moves To Shift Presidency Election Date
The National Assembly in Abuja has summoned lawmakers back from recess and will resume plenary on Tuesday, 17 February 2026, amid plans to revisit the date of the 2027 presidential election.
The move follows growing concern over the current timetable fixed by INEC and signals that a change may be on the table.
The Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, issued a notice directing senators and members of the House of Representatives to reconvene at 11am.
Behind the formal announcement, insiders say the urgent sitting is largely to consider shifting the presidential poll from 20 February to 13 February 2027 in response to complaints about a clash with Ramadan.
Pressure has mounted from Muslim groups and political figures who argue that holding the election during the fasting period could affect participation.
INEC had earlier scheduled the presidential and National Assembly elections for 20 February 2027, with governorship polls set for 6 March, while noting it could seek legislative action if adjustments become necessary.
The early recall also comes shortly after lawmakers approved electronic transmission of results to INEC’s portal but made real-time upload optional, citing infrastructure limits.
As plenary resumes, attention now turns to whether the proposed date shift will pass and how it could reshape preparations for the 2027 race.
