Nwachinemere Kalu-Agba, a Nigerian-born public servant, has been re-elected as Deputy Mayor (Mayor Pro Tem) of Orangeburg, South Carolina, for a new two-year term running through 2027.
The announcement was made public on Sunday via a Facebook post by Peter Agba Kalu, who extended congratulations and encouraged the community to celebrate the achievement.
Kalu-Agba also serves as a City Council representative for his district. He previously held the Deputy Mayor role but stepped down due to a state law that limits the Mayor Pro Tem’s term to two years, after which a new election is required. This law also prevents immediate re-election but allows former holders to run again after a break.
Following the completion of his successor’s term, Kalu-Agba resumed the Deputy Mayor position and will continue to serve simultaneously as both Deputy Mayor and council member. His current city council term is set to expire in 2027, when he will decide whether to run for re-election.
