Obi Criticizes Senate Over Election Law
Peter Obi has criticised the Senate leadership following remarks credited to Senate President Godswill Akpabio on the Electoral Act, which sparked public debate over the handling of election reforms.
His reaction comes amid growing concerns about transparency ahead of future polls.
The former Anambra State governor said the comments sent the wrong signal at a time when Nigerians expect stronger safeguards for credible elections.
He argued that the Senate should focus on building trust in the electoral process rather than creating confusion around key provisions of the law.
Obi warned that unclear or conflicting statements from top lawmakers could weaken public confidence and fuel suspicion about the commitment to free and fair elections.
He stressed that electoral laws must be clear, consistent, and fully aligned with democratic principles.
He urged the National Assembly to act in the national interest by protecting reforms that promote transparency and fairness. According to him, Nigeria’s democracy depends on firm institutions and laws that leave no room for doubt during elections.
