Ohanaeze Disowns Igbo Title In South Africa
Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has opposed the installation of an “Igwe Ndigbo na East London” in East London, a move that sparked protests among some South Africans.
The group said the action does not reflect Igbo tradition or authority.
The organisation stated that the title is not recognised within its structure and has no legal standing. It warned that such actions could create tension and misrepresent the Igbo leadership system abroad.
Ohanaeze maintained that traditional titles must follow due process and approval from recognised authorities in Igboland. It added that any installation done outside this process cannot be accepted.
The group called for calm and urged respect for local laws and cultural sensitivities, stressing the need for unity and proper representation of Igbo identity outside Nigeria.
