President Bola Tinubu has announced an immediate six-month ban on the export of raw shea nuts, a move aimed at curbing informal trade, encouraging local processing, and increasing the economic value of Nigeria’s shea industry.
The government expects the policy to stabilize the sector and generate substantial short-term revenue.
Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, confirmed the ban during a briefing at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, explaining that the measure aligns with strategies used by other West African nations to strengthen domestic processing and create jobs within the shea value chain.
Vice President Kashim Shettima is leading a stakeholder meeting to ensure smooth implementation of the ban. The government is also exploring initiatives to support local processors and further develop the shea industry during this period.
The policy highlights Nigeria’s commitment to adding value to its agricultural exports while promoting sustainable economic growth in the sector.
