Student Protest Led To Rector Suspension
Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has suspended the Rector of Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, Engr Dr Abdul Jimoh Mohammed, after a student protest disrupted academic activities on the campus.
The action followed unrest linked to the temporary relocation of the NYSC orientation camp to the institution.
The decision was announced on Wednesday through a statement issued by the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Sa’adatu Modibbo Kawu.
The governor also approved the setting up of a three-member panel to look into the protest and the conduct of the school’s management before and during the incident.
The committee is expected to review what triggered the protest, how the situation was handled, and any gaps that may have led to the unrest.
It will also propose steps to prevent a repeat and suggest ways to strengthen the stability and administration of the polytechnic. Pending the outcome, the most senior Deputy Rector has been directed to take over in an acting capacity.
The protest began when students opposed the use of the campus as a temporary NYSC orientation camp after corps members were moved from Yipkata due to insecurity in Kwara North.
Tension rose after students blocked the school gate, leading to police intervention. Tear gas was later used to disperse the protesters, who said the arrangement disrupted learning and raised concerns about safety and overcrowding.
