TCN Rejects P’Harcourt DisCo Power Claims
The Transmission Company of Nigeria has rejected claims by the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company over the country’s transmission capacity.
The dispute arose after PHEDC shared figures on Nigeria’s power sector in a public update. TCN said the data presented was outdated and misleading.
PHEDC had stated that Nigeria’s transmission capacity stood at 7,300MW, with operational output between 4,000MW and 5,000MW.
It also blamed power shortages on gas supply issues and low water levels at hydro stations. The company listed major power plants and said it receives a share of daily electricity allocation.
“First, it’s important to note that the daily output on the national grid is a function of what the DisCos nominate, what the GenCos declare they can generate, and what TCN declares it can wheel.
There is a penalty against any of these three players if they fail to meet what they declared,” the statement read.
“The question is, ‘Do the DisCos nominate beyond 4,000MW to 5,000MW?’ This is a question for Port Harcourt DisCo to verify before making distracting publications.
Every day ahead, the Nigerian Independent System Operator looks at what each player declares and tries to strike a balance, which is what is then generated, transmitted, and distributed,” it added.
TCN said its current transmission capacity is 8,700MW, adding that recent records show higher power delivery than PHEDC suggested.
It urged stakeholders to verify information before sharing it, warning that wrong data could affect public trust and decisions in the power sector.
