Terrorists Attacks Kaduna Churches, Kills
Terrorists struck in Kaduna State, killing at least seven people and abducting several others during Easter worship in Ariko community, Kachia Local Government Area, in the early hours of Sunday.
The attackers targeted two churches — First ECWA Church Ariko and St Augustine Catholic Church Ariko — where worshippers had gathered for celebrations. Residents said gunmen stormed the area in large numbers, opening fire and causing chaos.
Mark Bawa, the councillor representing Awon Ward, confirmed the incident and said he was heading to the community to verify the exact number of casualties. Initial reports suggest at least seven people were killed, though figures may change as more details emerge.
He explained that poor telecommunications in the area may have delayed any emergency response, allowing the attackers to operate for a long period. Witnesses said the assailants surrounded the community, shot at worshippers, and took several people into the bush.
Residents described the attack as prolonged and unchallenged, raising concerns about the safety of rural communities, especially during religious gatherings.
The incident follows a similar attack in February 2026 in Kurmin Wali, also in Kachia, where many worshippers were abducted during a church event. That earlier attack had already sparked concern over security in Southern Kaduna.
Police spokesperson Mansir Hassan said more information would be provided after further investigation.
Observers say the repeated attacks show ongoing security gaps in the region, with communities left exposed during major events like Easter.
