Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has apologised to Nigerians for the team’s failure to qualify for the FIFA World Cup and has pledged a strong performance at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Osimhen’s remarks were shared on Sunday by CAF-accredited photojournalist Pooja on X. He acknowledged the high expectations surrounding the Super Eagles but stressed that neither he, his teammates, nor the coaching staff felt any pressure, citing confidence in the squad’s talent.
“The expectation is really high, not just within the camp but also from Super Eagles fans all over the world. But there is no pressure on me, my teammates, or the coach because we know the quality we have,” he said.
Describing AFCON as a chance for redemption, Osimhen said the tournament offers the team an opportunity to make fans proud after the World Cup disappointment.
“This AFCON is our chance to right our wrongs and show Super Eagles fans everywhere that we have much more to offer,” he added.
He also apologised directly to Nigerians for missing out on the World Cup, saying: “We’re so sorry. We have to take this moment to say sorry for not securing a World Cup ticket. I know the disappointment on many fans’ faces, but life goes on, and we must keep moving forward.”
Looking ahead, Osimhen expressed optimism about Nigeria’s prospects in the tournament, emphasising determination and effort. “This AFCON is our opportunity to perform at our best and aim to win. It won’t be easy; we must fight for every ball and every game. We want to reach the final, and that’s where we aim to win,” he said.
